Featuring 15 visual artists, 20 performers, and two bands, the out-of-this-world party returns for a fifth year to celebrate the anniversary of the first human space flight. The event honors cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin with live music, a sci-fi spoof, burlesque entertainment, an art exhibition, a lunar dance party, and more.

Visit www.c2yn.com for tickets, artist links, and announcements.

C2YN will occupy nearly all of the Artisphere’s futuristic spaces. The Dome will host “The Wrath of Shock-a-Khan,” an episodic stage show punctuated with burlesque performances from DC and NYC starlets. The crew of the S.S.S. Gagarin gets flown for a loop when their old Starfleet Academy buddy Shock-a-Khan comes to call. This 45-minute show features Kittie Glitter as Captain Ballcrusher, Andrew Wodzianski as Drink Bot, Matt Grant as Number Two, and Lucrezia Blozia as Shock-a-Khan. Burlesque stars Candy Del Rio, The Reverend Valentine, GiGi Holliday, and NYC’s Pinkie Special will keep the audience’s drive on warp. Surf-rockers Atomic Mosquitos will use their infectious tunes sprinkled with the spacey sounds of a Theremin to for an exciting pre-show set.

The MEZZ Gallery will host the exhibition, “Elevator to the Moon: Retro-Future Visions of Space,” where 15 contemporary artists draw inspiration from 20th century predictions to create work that celebrates beautifully flawed ideas and inspires new visions for the future. Artists: Chris Bishop, Scott Brooks, Jared Davis, Dana Ellyn, Elstabo, Todd Gardner, Linas Garsys, Sherill Anne Gross, Emily Greene Liddle, Rob Lindsay, Chris Rackley, Matt Sesow, Scott Speck, Steve Strawn, and Andrew Wodzianski. A sneak preview is available online.

The Ballroom will blast off with the jazzy-ska band Eastern Standard Time. Called one of DC’s Best Bands by The Washington Post, E.S.T. has toured the universe — even traveling as far as Yuri’s homeland: Mother Russia. Space cadets can enjoy their sounds from the dance floor or the reduced-gravity chamber (moon bounce). After the live music set, DJ P.VO (host of the radio show Hometown Sounds) will embark on a lunar dance party guaranteed to make you want to moonwalk.

Throughout the event the atmosphere will be high with $5 Stoli drink specials (it was the first vodka in space after all), entertainment by DC’s premiere 60’s go-go troupe Shake, the Jedi Guardians, the hooping wonders of Strange Powers, a special intergalactic edition of the “Spelling Buzz” spelling bee, and more. Costume Contests, geeky giveaways from ThinkGeek, final frontier photo ops and more complete this out of this world event.

Hope everyone had a great holiday. After an intense year, it was nice to take a break. I went to some amazing parties, did some cooking, hung out with friends, and even found time to play some video games, which I could always call “research.” I still managed to do some work, and started a painting for the Monster Show, which opens February 27th at Prince Georges Community College’s Marlboro Gallery, and some illustration work.

I’m looking forward to 2012 and resolving to slow down just a bit. It feels like I’ve been rushing forever and need to stop and smell the roses – or the coffee or whatever – especially when it comes to painting. I do have several group shows lined up, including exhibits in the UK, LA, NYC, and beyond. I also have several in DC for a change. I’m not planning on a solo show this year, which will be a nice break. My home page and “Upcoming” sections of my blog are updated with a few links, so check those out.

“The Luckiest Widow in the World and Other Tales of Misfortune” at Last Rites Gallery runs through January 28th, so there’s still plenty of time to catch it. The opening was December 3rd, and we had a great time. Big thanks to Paul, Genevive, and the entire Last Rites Gang. The show also spurred some nice write ups here and there. In a piece titled ”Scott G. Brooks: X-Rated,” Visionary Artistry Magazine wrote:

I usually have to do a double take with all of his work. Brooks’ artwork is shocking. But, I was not entirely appalled because this outrageous artist plays entirely in his own field, and his artwork is unmistakably one of a kind. His insane, x-rated, pornographic showcase will undoubtedly plague my mind for the next couple of weeks. His work makes for an unmistakable horror show, and I am still trying to figure out who would place images like these in their home. I am being somewhat obtrusive and over-bearing, but witnessing Brooks’ artwork will put you in a perfectly uncomfortable state. However, at the same time, it is quite intriguing and admirable. Brooks blends his work in a form of images that reminds me of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. It has a holy connection to it but at the same time it appears to serve as an outcast to other artwork. In other words, there is a subject as the center piece, and there are many people, or buildings, or symbols surrounding this subject (just like Michelangelo’s “Last Judgment.” Read the rest here.

I’d only consider myself R rated – or maybe NC-17 at a stretch – but it’s a fun read and many thanks to Visionary Artistry Magazine. Art Nouveau Magazine also had a great spread. Big thanks also to Hi Fructose, Creep Machine, and Arrested Motion for including my work.

Mining the shadows of his psyche, artist Scott G. Brooks takes inspiration from his work as a children’s book illustrator to create a foreboding narrative exhibition, ‘The Luckiest Widow In The World And Other Tales Of Misfortune,’ opening on December 3rd at NYC’s Last Rites Gallery. His figures, bearing signature anatomical exaggerations of the body, are set in far darker world than in previous works as the ‘tales’ focus on inner and outer manifestations of demons as well as captured scenes of misfortune. The figure centric compositions unfurl a potent mastery of atmosphere and setting, where characters cast in pervious works now meet with the moment of their doom. It’s a great lineup of artists, and I’m happy to be included. My new painting is “Intelligent Design in the Age of Enlightenment.”

Here is a teaser with some images from Arrested Motion blog:

On July 1st, the Corey Helford Gallery will be celebrating their five year anniversary in style. The Culver City showspace will be hosting a group show featuring many of the artists that have exhibited with them in the past including Todd Schorr, Joe Sorren, Gary Baseman, Ray Caesar, Sas & Colin Christian, D*Face, Ron English, Natalia Fabia, Brandi Milne, Kazuki Takamatsu, SHAG, Dave Kinsey, Adam Wallacavage, Greg Simkins, David Stoupakis, Meggs, Nick Walker, Kent Williams, Luke Chueh, Mia, Amy Sol, Stella Im Hultberg and many more. Looks like Eric Joyner (interviewed) will be bringing some donuts (what else?) to the party!

Over 20 other artists in my neighborhood will be open, so it’s a perfect opportunity to see lots of great work and get some good deals. My studio will be open both Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 5.

I’ll have new and older paintings and drawings on display, as well as prints, sketches, and illustrations. This year I’m bringing out original illustrations from some children’s books I’ve worked on. These will be available at great prices and each comes with a signed copy of the book, while supplies last. Makes a great gift.

I’ll have plenty of refreshments, so you’re welcome to stop by, say hello, and have a drink.

Studio address:
929 Florida Ave NW, Apt 7008

I’m very excited to be included in Modern Fabulists. Curated by Richard Scarry and Chippy Coates. The show runs from April 22 to May 29th at View Gallery in Bristol, UK.

Modern Fabulists is a groundbreaking exhibition featuring America and Europe’s most extraordinary contemporary artists. For the first time we are collaborating with the new American and English art duo Coates and Scarry, which has exposed us to one of the most comprehensive collections of young, international and diverse modern artists of our time.

The artists have created new pieces around the theme of “modern fabulists – a composer of fables, a teller of tales, a liar… an artist”. The exhibition celebrates the enduring relevance of storytelling. Pagan imagery, human and animal mixed manifestations, the shocking juxtaposed with the sublime, all come together to represent what are ultimately beautiful and spiritual renderings and interpretations of folklore and tales.

The artists featured in the show are Dan Baldwin, Jacob Arden McClure, Dee Dee Cheriel, Karen Akester, Anne Faith Nicholls, Corine Perier, Lori Field, Marco Mazzoni, Pepa Prieto, David Stein, Derek Weisberg, Hayley Murphy, Kirsty Whiten, Lauren Bergman, Angela Lizon and Scott G Brooks. We preview a few in this blog with more to follow in future updates. Read more…

Curated by Jared Davis, 18 artists exhibit work centered on the theme of Man’s journey into space. Exploring both science-fact and science-fiction, these artists deliver unique perspectives on the cosmos.

Yeah, we know the opening is on St. Patrick’s Day…but Yuri’s Night is like the St. Patty’s day for Space…so come ‘on and celebrate with our little green men…
…
Exhibiting artists: Chris Bishop, Stephen Blickenstaff, Scott Brooks, Jared Davis, Alan Defibaugh, Dana Ellyn, Elstabo, Todd Gardner, Linas Garsys, Sherill Anne Gross, Rob Hornung, Emily Greene Liddle, Rob Lindsay, Dave Savage, Matt Sesow, Michael Enn Sirvet, Steve Strawn and Andrew Wodzianski.

Exhibition runs through April 30th. Get a preview at www.outofthisworldparty.com.

Also, check out the corresponding cosmonaughty party: Countdown to Yuri’s Night on April 9th. Tickets at www.outofthisworldparty.com.

WHAT IS YURI’S NIGHT?:
Countdown to Yuri’s Night is an artistic spin on a high-science holiday. On April 12, 1961, Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin embarked on the historic first manned space flight. Every year around April 12, Yuri’s Night parties are held all around the world; it’s like St. Patrick’s Day or the Fourth of July for space.
