Grand Central Arts Forum, the support group for Grand Central Art Center (GCAC) revitalizes the hit exhibition, ’100 Artists See Satan’, a survey of contemporary artists and their interpretation of the supreme demon. Unlike the original exhibition, this iteration of the collection will be presented as a fundraiser, with works available for sale to the public. All proceeds will benefit future GCAC programs and exhibitions.

Public Reception July 3rd, 7-10pm.

Exhibit open through June 26th through August 15, 2010.

Countdown to Yuri’s Night, an out of this world art extravaganza that combines visual art, performance, and music to commemorate the first human space flight, is back for a third year.

Returning this year are Trixie Little and The Evil Hate Monkey, an award‐winning acrobatic superduo who dance, flip, fight, and strip for the opposing forces of good and evil. Their adventures have taken them all across the United States, and now they are charting a course to conquer the galaxy. Miss Saturn, a New York‐based staple of vaudeville and comedy with her 40 orbit rings (hula hoops), is also making an encore appearance. Hosted by Southern Hemisphere, the show’s emcee best known for her work as Card Girl in The Lobsterboy Revue, the Cosmonaughty Variety Show also includes:
• L’il Dutch, DC’s salty sweet burlesque star and host of The Dutch Oven;
• Eva Brontosaurus, a musical comedy trio that’s one part drag queen and two parts real women who like to do drag;
• Dr. Swami YoMahmi, Ph.D., a regular traveler in the D.C. sideshow universe, ably assisted by his lab assistant Booger; and Demivolt, a Washington‐based post‐punk/rock/surf band that will provide the musical backdrop for the show.

In an “Astro‐Pop” art exhibition organized by artists Scott G. Brooks and Jared Davis, approximately 20 visual artists will exhibit work that celebrates, reflects, and imagines space, from hard‐core science to the lowbrow culture.

Confirmed artists include: Chris Bishop, Stephen Blickenstaff, Scott G Brooks, Chris Chen, Jared Davis, Alan Defibaugh, Dana Ellyn, Elstabo, Gregory Ferrand, Todd Gardner, Linas Garsys, Sherill Anne Gross, Jeannette L. The night’s festivities also include a lunar dance party with Chief Boogie Officer DJ P.Vo and special guest DJs, Stoli‐sponsored drink specials, a reduced‐gravity chamber (moonbounce), celestial costume contests, and a final frontier photo booth. Countdown to Yuri’s Night is an artistic spin on a high‐science holiday. On April 12, 1961, Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin embarked on the historic first manned space flight. Every year around April 12, Yuri’s Night parties are held all around the world; it’s like St. Patrick’s Day or Cinco de Mayo for space. Countdown to Yuri’s Night in Wired! Wired ran a great writeup and featured many of the artists showing this year. They wrote:

…The show brings together Pop-Surrealism, Post-Pop and Lowbrow stylists who “frequently and freely embrace the imagery of science fiction and mid-century tropes,” according to Countdown lead organizer Jared Davis. “Countdown to Yuri’s Night is an excellent excuse to feature their more sci-fi inspired work.

“Whether it’s Scott Brooks’ nightmare vision of a future where Cupie-doll robots battle for Thorazine, Steve Strawn’s photo journalism from the great robot wars or Sherill Anne Gross’ green pinup girls, they all create a vision of the future of humankind in space. Art Whino, a prominent pop-surrealist and urban contemporary art gallery presents ART WHINO: MIAMI.

ART WHINO: MIAMI will be an innovative New Brow exhibition, complete with receptions and musical performances that will heighten the experience beyond the typical art show. Art from two separate traveling exhibitions, LIFE ESSENTIALS and OLD SKOOLIN’ will be brought together in Miami for the first time. This landmark multi-city, comprehensive exhibition will bring together the best of both traditionally trained and urban street art styles, helping to more define this era in contemporary art and set the bar even higher for the direction of art today. This combined show will highlight both music and art that spans the spectrum of current trends, and will be accompanied by installations and auxiliary exhibitions featuring live painting by several Art Whino artists.

Art Whino has also teamed up with Urbanite Bistro to host a special all day event Thursday, December 3rd in the outdoor garden space of Urbanite Bistro, featuring over 15 Art Whino artists painting live and musical performances. Artists will also showcase some of their newest works inside the restaurant for the entire of the month of December.

I exhibited “Patience”…

In October 2008, the Nevin Kelly Gallery hosted the first “zeitgeist” show, titled Under Surveillance. Curated by Ellyn Weiss and Sondra N. Arkin, it presented the responses of twelve artists to what Weiss and Arkin saw as one of the most important elements of the then-prevailing ethos: “the increasingly diminishing zone of personal privacy available to any of us as we are constantly under surveillance by a growing array of government, corporate and media technologies.” As a follow up, Weiss and Arkin are asking a group of local artists to reflect upon an uncertain future and respond to the question: “What’s important now?”

I mentioned here previously that I’ve been working with the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) the last year or so, but I haven’t posted any images. Here’s the latest. They’re all for WWE Kids, a new magazine aimed at the younger fans. They’re great fun for me as well. This one features Kane and Batista. I wasn’t much of a fan before, but I’m getting to know all the guys now. This is also the first one I did entirely digitally on my tablet. My studio is about 1.5 miles from the mall, close enough to walk, but long ago we decided to stay in and watch everything on TV. Just last night I was offered two tickets to the swearing in ceremony, but passed. Cold weather and I are not on good terms.

We’ve been out quite a bit already. Blowoff Saturday night, and Obama Wonderama at the Warehouse on Sunday. I read that Dupont Circle was turning into an impromptu meeting place for several groups so I walked down and saw this 20 feet tall inflatable Bush balloon, being pelted with old shoes.  There was also a stage set up and a group gathering  to walk down to the White House to perform a ritualistic cleansing.  The smell of sage was overwhelming. We spent the remainder of Inauguration Eve with a small gathering of friends in Petworth.

We have several inaugural parties tonight including Art of Change, also at the Warehouse. That is across the street from the Convention Center, which will host several official balls tonight, so getting there will require a bit of an effort.

Workwise, I’m trying to finish up illustrations for a new book, so I plan on hunkering down in front of the TV with some work. I still have one more book (16 illustrations) to do after this, as well as a few digital illustrations on deck.

I had a model over on Saturday, and several more scheduled this week. I’ve managed to start several canvases, and the models will get me that much closer. My next big show will be September 9th up in NYC. More information soon.

So, to sum it up, it’s been a busy couple of months, mostly working on commercial projects, and waiting for Obamapalooza. I will be wrapping up everything this month, and getting back to my paintings full time in a few weeks. I’ll post images when I can.
