Busy art weekend. Open Studios today and tomorrow from 12 – 5 and tonight from 7 – 10 is the opening reception for Threesome: A Girl, a Guy, and a Gay.
Mid City Artists had quite a plug on NBC 4 news yesterday afternoon, and it’s a beautiful fall day so I expect lots of people out and about. I’ve never hosted an “Open Studio” before – except with friends so I’m making it up as I go along. I have “inventory” in boxes, drawers, and closets throughout my space. It was tough to know what to pull out as well as how to display it but everything looks good.
Very much looking forward to a fun opening of “Threesome: A Girl, a Guy, and a Gay” at Studio One Eight tonight. We laid out the show Thursday and everyone’s work looks good together. The pieces seemed to interact with each other in unusual and unexpected ways.
The title. We were brainstorming and it came up almost as a joke, but it stuck. It was always meant to be humorous, but I suppose not everyone sees it that way. I’m as out as I can be. I think gay people may have had more issues with it than straight people, I don’t know. Anyway, it was a campy title and I’m exhibiting big paintings of naked people, mostly men.
Ever since my class with Rob this past spring I’d wanted to work on some figurative paintings and this seemed like the golden opportunity. Especially after the Jumping Through Hoops show, which was all drawings and featured mostly children. I had a great time working with the models and doing some paintings with little or no narrative. It was a bit much since I also had some commercial work thrown in at the same time, as well as this open studio, but everything came together. It’s been exactly 3 months since Jumping Through Hoops opened and the time zipped by. I’m looking forward to kicking back and enjoying a quiet holiday!
