“Seven” WPA\Corcoran Exhibition

I will have work in this exhibit…

* June 30 – September 9, 2005 – WPA/Corcoran Presents SEVEN: Seven Separate Shows Under One Roof
Curated by F. Lennox Campello, assisted by Sandra Fernandez and Adrian Schneck. Opening June 30, 2005, “SEVEN,” will be a provocative exhibition of WPA/C artists who embody the spectacular creative diversity of the DC region. It will be hosted at seven different exhibition spaces in and around the Warehouse Gallery and Theatre.
“With this multi-space exhibition I intend to present my selections from among the WPA|C membership in a form that delivers seven separate exhibitions and performances,” says Campello. “I bring my familiarity with many DC area artists as well as a desire to discover many new ones from among the WPA/C’s slide registry, which I will review twice. In the end, I intend for “Seven” to leave an interesting and provocative footprint, as well as a fresh, bold statement, for the WPA|C member artists featured in the show.” – F. Lennox Campello.

In Michigan

My brother, Craig, is getting married today and I’m one of the groomsmen. We flew in Thursday and barely made the rehearsal on time due to a delayed flight and traffic. Last night was a BBQ with the brides family, and then Karaoke at the Red Baron Bar with the groom, the best man, the brides’ son and other assorted wedding related people. The wedding is today at 5:00.

It’s like wedding fever here. Dawn has a big family and everyone is in town for it. It’s been a long time since I’ve been involved in any wedding – much less one this large. Despite how much money, planning and stress are involved, it’s a happy event and everyone is having a good time. During rehearsal the “Wedding Planner” who was supposed to help everyone be in the right place at the right time was instead lecturing us about underage drinking. So the walk through became a run through and I doubt anyone remembers where they are supposed to be.

I might post a pic or 2 later – in the meantime this is us about 39 years ag0, we haven’t got much taller. From left – Greg, Craig, Scott, Michelle.

The big Flint Art Fair is also this weekend down at the Cultural Center so we’ll head down to that for a little while. I was very involved in the Flint Art scene before moving to DC.

Classes at the Art League

I had my last class at the Art League in Alexandria yesterday. After not having taken an art class in 20 years it was a real eye opener. First off, the only person I had any interest in taking classes from was Rob Liberace, an artist whose work I respect highly. A few people were puzzled as to why I’d want to take a class, and concerned it might muck up my style, which never occurred to me, I just wanted to focus on anatomy and a more academic approach to the figure. And with a show coming up in September, it’s a good time for a kick in the ass.

I ended up with several nice pieces, and have an even higher appreciation for anatomy and working with the figure. The other students were very supportive, and most were accomplished artists, doing great work. They did give me a few odd looks when the eye’s inevitably drifted apart, but they figured it out I think. One guy later told me that they wondered if they should say anything, and Rob also made a comment ealy on that the “eyes were too far apart”. I hate to make too big a deal out of the whole eye thing – to me it seems like everyone is doing it. Joe Sorren and Greg Ferrand to just name two.

I hope to get some of the work scanned in, and photos taken in the next couple days and will post here. The three color chalk/pencil technique agrees with me the most, and I could go on and on about the impact Rob had on my painting, but since I have drawing show coming up I need to focus on that. I do look forward to squeezing in some painting as well. One of my objectives was to watch someone else do all this, I always work alone in my studio, so my habits could have been way out of whack. I was happy to know I was doing alot of things right, but I feel much more confident in the technical aspects of my work now.
